Walking with the Risen Christ
— The Road to Emmaus
Today is Easter. In Luke 24, we read the story of how the risen Jesus walked alongside two disciples on the road to Emmaus. On that first Easter evening, the two disciples were leaving Jerusalem filled with disappointment and confusion. As they were discussing everything that had happened, the risen Lord came near and walked with them. Yet something unusual happened. Scripture says, “their eyes were kept from recognizing Him” (Luke 24:16).
The phrase “their eyes were kept from recognizing Him” suggests that their eyes were somehow restrained or prevented from seeing who He truly was. It was not because there was something wrong with their vision, but because God did not allow them to recognize Jesus at that moment.
Why would Jesus do this?
On one hand, Jesus intentionally drew near to them and walked with them in their disappointment. On the other hand, He did not immediately reveal Himself to them. It may seem contradictory, but Jesus wanted them to recognize Him in a different way.
Luke 24:27 tells us, “Beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, He explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning Himself.”
Instead of performing a miracle or immediately revealing His resurrected glory, Jesus walked them through the Scriptures. He opened up the entire story of redemption and showed them how the Old Testament had always pointed to Christ.
If you had the choice, would you ask Jesus to show you a miracle, or would you ask Him to study the Scriptures with you?
Often we think miracles strengthen faith the most, yet Jesus chose to rekindle their faith through the Word of God. Even though their eyes had not yet recognized Him, their hearts were already being awakened by the Scriptures. Later they said,
“Were not our hearts burning within us while He talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?” (Luke 24:32).
The road to Emmaus was really a journey of rediscovering Christ.
In many ways, the Christian life is just like that. Each of us is on a journey of learning to know Christ more deeply. Many times we cannot see Him, yet the risen Lord continues to walk with us.
In those days, the disciples walked with Jesus physically. Today, we walk with Him through His Word and through the presence of the Holy Spirit. When we read the Bible, spend time in prayer, or meditate on God’s Word, we are walking with the Lord. When we listen to preaching, study the Scriptures, or attend Sunday school, we are also walking with Him.
At times we may feel like those two disciples—confused, disappointed, or struggling to understand what God is doing. Yet the Lord is still beside us, patiently guiding us and helping us see Him through His Word.
This Easter, wherever we are and whatever circumstances we may be facing—whether in seasons of joy or seasons of struggle—let us remember this truth:
The risen Lord has not left us. He is walking with us on the journey of life.
May we experience what those disciples experienced:
that our hearts are rekindled by God’s Word, and our faith strengthened by His presence.
Because the risen Christ is still walking with us today.
